Jatta National Archaeological Museum is the centuries-old legacy of a family deeply in love with art and archaeology

**Origins of the Jatta Collection**

Considered one of the most important international private collections, it is the result of the foresight of its founders and **preserves unchanged the original nineteenth-century layout** in the Museum that has become a state heritage site since 1993.

The collection is initially divided into two parts, one kept in Ruvo da Giulio, the other in Giovanni's Neapolitan residence, was **unified after the death of the two brothers** by Giulia Viesti, Giulio's widow, and placed in the new family palace. After the death of Giulia Viesti, her son Giovanni Jr. took care of the preparation of the Museum and in 1869 he published the first edition of the Catalog which contained an accurate and passionate description for a total of 1752 pieces, to which was added the collection of 535 coins. 

**The exhibition halls** 

In the arrangement, the **aesthetic criterion** rather than chronological was followed, of neoclassical taste with the finds ordered according to their "value and artistic principle", along a path that winds progressively from the first room, where the objects considered of lesser value were placed, up to the last room in a crescendo of **amazement and wonder** on the decorations and themes represented on the vases with different shapes and functions.

The exhibits belong to different classes of ancient production, dating from the seventh and fourth centuries BC, coming from the area of Ruvo, Taranto, Canosa and in some cases from Greece itself. The **first room** is defined as "terracotta" for the lesser beauty of the finds, decorated with geometric elements dating back to the Peucetian age (VII - VI century BC). The **second room** collects the most conspicuous nucleus of finds, with 700 red-figure vases originating from Puglia and Greece, characterized by decorations of female figures, children or animals. In the **third room** appear vases of strange and unusual shape, which precisely for this reason attracted the attention of collectors: *rhyta*, containers for liquids ending in animal or human heads. 

The **last room** contains the well-known Attic crater with the representation of the death of the giant Talos, located on the column in a central position. Standing out in the side windows are the small containers for ointments in colored glass paste or alabaster, necklaces in glass paste, black-figure vases and Corinthians, which make this room a condensation of wonders and antiquities.
