Description
Medea is the most contemporary of the protagonists of the myth. This woman, mother, assassin has always fascinated creatives and audiences with her tragic story. Character with a thousand nuances, ruthless murderer, bewitching sorceress, barbarian in a foreign land, betrayed wife, Medea is both victim and executioner.
A story of love and death where different narrative currents intertwine, updating the classic story and creating a fascinating figure, dominated by a utilitarian society. And this is why Medea, heroine with a complex and violent vitality, chooses to make extreme gestures to affirm her will and strength as a woman, no less precious than that of a man.
The protagonist of the exhibition curated by Demetrio Paparoni struggles between rationality and passion. Driven by a lucid madness that will mark her history forever, she lives again thanks to the sensitivity of 17 international artists who, with works specially created for Syracuse, have managed to make her myth more current than ever, declining it with personal and creative styles and languages.
“It could be said of Medea [...]: she was recounted by everyone. But everyone described her differently. None of the more than four hundred re-readings [...] has returned her complete and definitive image. Medea [...] is human, but she is the repository of knowledge and powers that transcend human ones; she is passionate, but never loses her lucidity; she is a barbarian, but she stands up to those who pass for civilized, she is the bearer of an archaic culture but she is more emancipated than any Greek woman” (The myth of Medea (2017), Maurizio Bettini and Giuseppe Pucci)
The exhibition is made possible thanks to the contribution of the INDA Foundation, the Municipality of Syracuse, Demetrio Paparoni, Aditus and Skira Editore.
