Walking in the Land of Puglia

22 May 2023
Grand Tour

Royal companion of Emperor Frederick II, the hawk, ethereal and graceful, with a sharp beak and sharp look, for centuries amazes with the strength of its wings and the precision of claws that inspire awe even in the proudest predator.

Undisputed ruler of the skies, master of the winds, fearless and proud hunter, in its movements it flies over a land with a thousand-year history, covering with its shade centuries-old olive trees, ruins and castles that have made the history of a territory with deep roots.

If we were to follow it, where would it take us?

  • 1.
    Alongside the community

The history of Puglia has its roots in the Paleolithic. To tell its plots and developments one of the most popular museums of the moment: the MArTA of Taranto.

Through finds that outline the millenary tradition of the city and deepen issues related to "sacred and profane" aspects of the ancient world, the National Archaeological Museum amazes the visitor thanks to a journey into the wonders of antiquity, remaining alongside the community through exhibitions and events that, through archeology, speak to everyone, without distinction.

From such a fresh and avant-garde museum could we expect more?

  • 2.
    Gem of Puglia

Like a diamond, Castel del Monte stands out in the lush landscape of the Andriese hinterland, flooding the surrounding area with light.

The result of a fruitful cultural syncretism where classical, Gothic and Arab elements are combined, the castle is the pride of the architectural-artistic heritage of Puglia.

Architectural, cultural and administrative symbol of the Swabian period, the perfection of its forms and the intrinsic symbolism make it a physical representation of the Imperial Power of the Frederick age.

Does it not also infuse you with profound suggestions?

  • 3.
    Walking with kings and queens

If you want to visit a living testimony of the crossroads of cultures that interested Puglia, Bari Swabian Castle is the right destination.

Built in the twelfth century, the Castle lived its period of splendor during the sixteenth century thanks to Isabella of Aragon and her daughter Bona Sforza, who introduced the model of life of a Renaissance court, attracting men of letters, poets and artists, transforming the structure from an austere military base to a refined Renaissance residence.

A real pearl of the Mediterranean!

  • 4.
    Do ghosts exist?

Strongly desired by Frederick II, the Trani Swabian Castle was a bulwark of defense for the Kingdom of Sicily. Built in fact in a rocky area and lowered directly on the sea, it provided a perfect control point from both natural and war attacks.

Scene of many important events, including the marriage of Manfred of Swabia with Elena Ducas, however, hides dark sides tinged with tragedy. The most handed down story is that of Armida, the legendary ghost of the Castle. Killed by her husband, who caught her with her lover, it is said that her spirit still roams the salons in search of her lost love.

Do you feel like going into the occult with us?

    Sea, scent of the sea

Have you ever seen a shaped gold ring designed as the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem?

If the answer is no, don't worry, you can remedy by visiting Egnazia Museum and Archaeological Park! Visiting Egnazia means embarking on a journey along thirty centuries, which winds through the finds kept in the internal rooms and in the greenery of the Park. But the great peculiarity of the museum lies in a wing entirely dedicated to underwater archaeology.

Thanks to a scenographic set-up that seems to drag the visitor into the depths of the seabed, the new section “Egnatia and the Sea" is a unique experience.

The seabed has never been so accessible!

  • 6.
    Rattles

Have you ever wondered what children played with in the ancient world? The Archaeological Museum of Gioia del Colle has the answer.

Its rooms collect some of the most curious finds that you will ever see, linked not only to the world of children, but also to the convivial one. Among them: a curious tintinnabulum of the fourth century BC (a rattle in the shape of a wild boar with a warrior armed with a shield astride his back), and a rython (drinking vase) with a deer's head.

Ready for a walk in the daily life of ancient peoples?

  • 7.
The land of the foreign king

A journey from Prehistory to the Dauni civilization? At the Archaeological Museum of Manfredonia it is possible!

The narrative develops along three thematic paths that retrace three major macro areas: the Neolithic civilizations, the metropolises of the Bronze Age and the society of the Dauni, the great protagonists of the museum.

The myths and legends formed around this society are numerous, but the most peculiar thing left to us as a legacy is a very original artistic manifestation: the Daunian stelae.

Their function? You will discover it by coming to visit the museum!

  • 8.
    Contemporaneously speaking

The Archaeological Park of Siponto is a symbol of how the dialogue between past and present can revive realities believed lost forever.

Visiting the archaeological area, in fact, you will find yourself in front of an incredible building. This is the work Where art reconstructs time by Edoardo Tresoldi, an innovative installation where, thanks to the use of 4500 meters of wire mesh, it was possible to reconstruct the lost side of the Early Christian Basilica.

A courageous choice thanks to which archeology and contemporary art dialogue giving an innovative vision of the landscape!

  • 9.
    Do you know Ciccillo?

If you don't know who we're talking about, don't worry, you can introduce yourself by going to the Archaeological Museum of Altamura!

Ciccillo, better known as the Man of Altamura, was a Neanderthal victim of an unfortunate hunting accident. The discovery of his skeleton, perfectly preserved, has helped scholars to acquire substantial information about this society and the exhibition amazes for the quality of the finds, presented to the public also through hyper-realistic reconstructions of the same.

    Curious to know him?

    Living canvases

Establish its own regional identity while crossing national borders? The National Gallery of Puglia "Girolamo and Rosaria Devanna" succeeds in this intent thanks to varied collections that outline the development of art from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.

Maintaining its sense of private collection, at the base of the exhibition, the visit path is designed to create new topics of debate and enchant with the artistic production of Apulian and international artists.

Ready to come back and return to these rooms?

  • 11.
    Archaeology and Nature

The Archaeological Park of Monte Sannace stands out for its considerable size: 33 hectares that make it the largest in all of Puglia.

The peculiarity of the site lies in the types of routes offered to visitors. On the one hand a more classic itinerary, the archaeological one, which allows you to discover the developments of the ancient city, on the other the naturalistic path, which accompanies the discovery of the different forms of vegetation developed between ruins and rural areas.

The perfect combination for those who love history, but cannot help but live in contact with nature.

  • 12.
    An unexpected defeat

The Battle of Cannae went down in history as the greatest defeat ever suffered by the Roman troops. The peculiarity? To date, no finds have yet been discovered that can determine that this battle actually took place.

But this does not detract from the profound historical value that the place had in terms of human development. Through a multimedia and interactive approach, the Antiquarium and Archaeological Park of Canne della Battaglia will accompany you to discover the history of the settlement that was probably the theater of this historical event.

An immersive museum open to all!

  • 13.
    Shades of pink

The rich colors of the finds on display at the Archaeological Museum of Canosa di Puglia is a testimony of the craftsmen of Canosa.

The Canosine ceramics, polychrome and plastic, is the happy result of a very original production that still amazes today, a symbol of the customs and mentality of the society of Canosa and of the relevance of the indigenous elite families within the community.

Trust us, it will be difficult to take your eyes off the windows.

    Imperishable frescoes

Inside the Castle of Copertino there are two rooms that will leave you speechless.

It is more correctly two chapels, one of the fifteenth century and one of the sixteenth century, which contain perfectly preserved frescoes. The Chapel of Mary Magdalene is characterized by a pictorial cycle dating back to the late Gothic, while the Chapel of San Marco presents figures from the Old and New Testaments.

    A truly breathtaking view!

Yes, Aditus has landed in Puglia in some of the most beautiful museums and archaeological parks in Italy. In the heel of the Boot we will find something to feed the mind and spirit, accompanied by the most peculiar characters and stories!
